Contemporary Clogs: Our Top 10 Picks
When clogs made their comeback on the fashion scene this season, there was a lot of resistance. Images of the Dutch wooden clog (also known as Klompen), the rubber garden clog, and the retro 70s clogs with wood platforms were conjured up before we even began to see some of the attractive contemporary styles that were just on the horizon. While some of the clogs of today have kept with the tradition of rustic and wooden appeal, many are styled with other trendy features such as leather-covered platforms, cork platforms, slingback straps, buckles, contrast stitching, and laser cutouts on leather.
We’ve noticed that many wooden platform sandals are sometimes being classified as clogs and it seems the definition of clog has been broadened a bit. So, where do we draw the line between clog and sandal. Arbitrarily, I guess! That said, we’ve decided to feature our picks for wooden platform sandals/clogs in a separate, upcoming post and keep this post limited to the classic, contemporary clog.
The contemporary clogs of today are fun, unexpected, classic, and comfortable to wear. And, with so many shoe designers putting their own spin on the classic clog, they are hard to resist. Here are our top 10 picks for clogs this season!
Charles David Women’s Ramble Clog
daniblack – Swiss (Espresso Waxy Calf) – Footwear
Diane Von Furstenberg Ode Clog
KORS Michael Kors Claudia Clog
As you can see, clogs have come a long way. They are much more polished and put-together for today’s fashion scene. And ‘love em’ or ‘hate em’, they are here to stay through the Fall/Winter season. Clogs are not the only retro 70′s style to come back, platforms made their debut during the 60′s and 70′s and since then they’ve been all the rage in recent years.
Western-Inspired Designs by Donald J. Pliner Shoes
Updated Western styles are very popular this season and no one does them more elegantly than Donald J Pliner. Donald J. Pliner is truly one of my favorite designers. Not only are his designs exciting and innovative, but he is true to his motto, “when the feet are uncomfortable, so is the mind, so is the body, so is the soul”, and committed to making comfortable shoes.
These new Western-inspired styles highlight Mr. Pliner’s love for the Southwest and its art. I love the exquisite details in the overlay designs of these styles, available at Zappos.

Donald J Pliner Coyate 2 Pump – The intricate overlays add charm to these elegant pumps.

Donald J Pliner Joist Ankle Boot – Another lovely design in the Western Collection. These boots feature classic lines with detailed overlays.

Donald J Pliner Juta- -Make a statement in these chic Western mules.

Donald J Pliner – Juta 2- Similar to the Juta, the Juta 2 mule features a Western heel and a suede insert that ensures a true fit with or without hosiery. These mules look like a boot when worn with jeans or trousers.

Laser Cut Out Shoes
When technology and design come together the result can be absolutely stunning. Laser cut out shoes have been around for awhile but, in recent years, this technology for creating leather cut outs has become more popular among many shoe designers. This season we’ve seen laser cut outs on every style of shoe, including boots, sandals, pumps and flats. Depending on the style of shoe and the pattern of the cut-out, laser cut outs can give way to an edgy modern look or it can create an ultra feminine look. If you are interested in seeing the laser cut technology in action, check out this u-tube video of demonstrating the amazing art of Laser Leather Cutting .
